In the Eighteenth Century, when the hotel was just an Inn, it was a regular haunt for a very famous visitor, the notorious Highwayman, Dick Turpin, which might explain a pistol found hidden in the rafters, bearing the chilling inscription VDick's Friend'.

Many famous celebrities of stage and screen have known the Anchor Hotel, which has become a welcome retreat for the stars and crews of nearby Shepperton studios. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton saw their romance blossom during the filming of 'Becket'.

The Hotel has also been used for the filming of major Drama Series, The most recent of which was 'Take a Girl Like You' starring Leslie Phillips and Emma Chambers.
